Removal compared with full remediation
Not every mold problem needs a full scale project. Many La Porte, IN calls involve a limited area: growth on the back of a vanity, a cluster of spots on a bedroom wall behind a dresser, or a moldy strip of drywall below a window that leaked during one season. Mold removal is the service we use for those defined situations. It still follows careful practices, but the containment, equipment and labor are sized to the job rather than to a worst case.
The difference matters for cost and disruption. A small removal can often be completed in a single visit. When the inspection shows growth extending into wall cavities, across several rooms or into the HVAC system, the work moves to our Mold Remediation service, and we explain why before anything changes.
How we define the area
Before removing anything, the technician measures the visible growth and checks the surrounding material with a moisture meter. Readings tell us whether the surface is still wet and how far dampness extends past what can be seen. A small hole or a borescope may be used to look inside a cabinet toe kick or behind a panel without opening the whole wall. The EPA uses roughly ten square feet as a reference point for areas that homeowners may handle themselves under the right conditions, and we treat anything near or above that size, or any growth in a sensitive location, with added precautions.
We also ask about the people living in the home. Anyone with asthma, allergies or a weakened immune system should be out of the room during removal.
Removal methods by surface
Hard, nonporous surfaces such as tile, glass, metal and sealed countertops are cleaned with detergent and water, then dried. Semi porous surfaces like finished wood cabinetry are HEPA vacuumed and cleaned, and the wood is sanded if staining remains after cleaning. Porous materials that have growth, including drywall, ceiling tile and carpet, are cut out and bagged, since mold can grow into their structure where cleaning cannot reach.
Even in a small job, the area is separated with plastic sheeting and a HEPA air scrubber runs while material is disturbed. Debris is bagged before it leaves the room, and surrounding surfaces are HEPA vacuumed and wiped when removal is complete.
Stopping the return
Removing growth without addressing moisture only resets the clock. The most common causes in small jobs are slow drain leaks, condensation on exterior walls behind furniture and bathrooms without effective exhaust. We identify the cause, recommend the right fix, and replace removed drywall through our Drywall Repair crew once the area is dry. If you would like confirmation that the area is clean afterward, our Mold Testing Inspection page describes independent checks.
Mold removal includes
- Measurement of visible growth
- Moisture readings around the affected area
- Plastic sheeting and HEPA air scrubbing
- Cleaning of hard and semi porous surfaces
- Cutting out and bagging porous materials
- Final HEPA vacuuming and wipe down
A typical removal visit
- 1
Measure
Visible growth and surrounding moisture are recorded.
- 2
Separate
Sheeting and an air scrubber isolate the work area.
- 3
Remove
Growth is cleaned or cut out depending on the material.
- 4
Close out
Surfaces are cleaned and the moisture cause is explained.
